With the HSC all done and dusted in early November, you will probably have a bit of time on your hands. What better way to use that time than to test out an in-demand industry, get a taster of a future course and gain some valuable skills along the way with some fee-free skills training over summer?
The Summer Skills program has been designed specifically with school leavers in mind. The program allows you to dip your toes in to the vocational training world by exploring courses that interest you and help to gain valuable skills to take with you wherever you want to go.
That’s why the NSW Government is offering fee-free, industry aligned short courses for young people aged between 16-24 who have left school and want to learn new skills.
Heaps of courses and locations are available across a range of vibrant growth sectors including early childhood education, care sectors, trades, hospitality, agriculture, construction, business, fitness, digital literacy and more.

This fee-free training offers multiple benefits such as:
- access to government-subsidised short courses
- qualifications to work in booming industries
- learning skills that give you a competitive edge – take courses in business, information technology, hospitality and many more which will get you skills highly valued in the workplace
- allowing you to gain skills that can be used to help bridge the gap from school to work
- helping find what interests you or learn new skills that can lead to a part-time job or career
- giving you a head start on your journey after school and your employment by upskilling through short courses and training opportunities.


You may be able to study a fee-free course if you are:
- aged between 16-24 and have left school*.
You will also need to be:
- living or working in NSW
- an Australian/New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or humanitarian visa holder.
To reiterate, if you are interested in accessing fee-free training you can do so regardless of your employment status, whether you’ve studied before and whether you have any prior qualifications.
No matter who you are, Summer Skills makes it easier to access the training you need to enter areas of skills shortage or high demand.
*Eligible participants must have completed Year 10 and left school permanently.
